2013 Lego pt. 4 Various

There’s a bunch of Technic freaks in my lug who are losing it over all the new sets. They really do look amazing, the sets the past couple of years have looked like they are right out of a fan convention.

42008 Service Truck

The Lego Architecture line is coming out with the Leaning Tower of Pisa

I wonder if they will give any kickback to this Cuusoo idea?

I’m curiously not going out of my gourd about Galaxy Squad, I really should be. This set looks good, it has some bizarre looking eggs

70709 Galactic Titan

I am however fascinated with this Lone Ranger set, 79109 Stagecoach Escape. Most of the Lone Ranger sets look wonderful but this one is now in the budget

2013 Lego pt. 3 LOTR & Castle

We’ve been catching glimpses of this set as it gets pulled on and off the net. It looks great and a smart buy all around.

79005 Battle at the Black Gate

The eagle’s wings are articulated.

Looks like they are using the same hair/beard piece for Saruman and Gandalf the White, smart recycling there.

Wizard Battle 79005, this looks like an inexpensive and classy little set.

79006 The Council of Elrond, there’s lots to like in this set, primarily the wonderful elf hair pieces!

Here’s a massive piece of set I won’t be picking up: 79008 Pirate Ship Ambush

There’s a whole bunch of nice new Castle sets coming out. Nothing mind blowing but great sets if you are building up a Castle collection. This new dragon is fun, 70403 Dragon Mountain:

2013 Lego pt. 2 Friends

There’s a big swack of new Friends sets coming out and can see myself picking up many of them, I’m pretty interested in this new yacht, it looks to be an interesting build, lots of great parts and figs with the super Friends palette.

41015 Dolphin Cruiser

Here’s a look at the series 3 polybag pets:

Also found another Friends site that looks pretty good:

2013 Lego pt. 1: StarWars

Between the Nuremberg and NY Toy Fairs there has been a lot of new sets unveiled.  Here’s some of what caught my eye and wanted to share. I’m going to break up the flood coming at you into several posts, I’m playing catchup for the past couple of weeks!

If you are into UCS then this is pretty necessary. If there wasn’t so much else coming down the pipe this would be on my list.

Figures from 6210 Jabba’s Sail Barge look incredible. I already have a Jabba so will probably be bricklinking these guys.

Pretty sure that the Rancor Pit 75005 has been on this blog before, but this is the one StarWars set that I’ll be definitely picking up this year, ideally at some kind of discount somewhere of course.

I don’t follow expanded universe stuff but this looks Darth Maul after he was cut in half with some delicious looking new robo legs. Are they the same as the new General Grievous?

Gottacon 2013

This will be the 5th year that VicLUG has been at Gottacon, Victoria’s 3 day gaming convention. We do a host of activities with our main event being VicWars, a table top minifig game loosely based on Mike Rayhawk’s BrickWars. After lots of brainstorming we’ve come up with a fun new rule set that integrates very nicely into the existing game called Active Buffs. I’m still in the process of putting together documents for the actual core rules and description but here is the new expansion we’ll be trying out:

and here’s a pic of the dice, freshly cooked!

We will also have a kid build area, blind build stands, a moc table and we’ve recently come into contact with a crew up island who are developing their own Lego game called Steel Wheels, a racing Lego game, so they will be there for a couple of days and really looking forward to seeing it in action. Our VicWars page listed below is still under construction but will hopefully have all the rule docs up there by tonight.

First Lego League BC Championships

I had an interesting opportunity this weekend to be a project judge at the BC Provincial Championships for First Lego League in Vancouver. Steve was there as a referee, as he’s done for several years in Victoria. I’ve tried my hat at ref’ing, design and now project judge over the past few years, and a couple of other VicLUG members have also done ref’ing and judging in the past as well but couldn’t make it to this stage.

Last week I was a project judge at a regional scrimmage match here in Victoria and saw a half dozen teams. Our role was to give the team extensive feedback so they could prep for the championships. I was able to see 4 of those teams and great to see how/if they followed through on the suggestions. There were 3 trophies for us to award and 2 of those went to teams we saw at the scrimmage. It was such a treat to see all of the kids’ presentations and kind of jealous of the ones I didn’t get to see, I was told that one team presented their project as an opera!

The clip below showcases one of the winning teams, the Hurricanes, and their project. Keep in mind most teams if they made a prototype, it might have been Lego replica or purely for demonstration. When I asked them how they got to their precise price point for their prototype they told me it was because they actually made it, factoring in patents and FDA approval.
